Our sustainability actions

We owe everything to nature, so we’re going all in on preserving and protecting it with our pioneering spirit that drives us to find revolutionary and sustainable ways to limit packaging waste and promote recycling.

Our approach

Though we’re proud to grab the reins and lead the change, we’re not doing it alone, because we believe that more passion means more progress. With that in mind, we’re challenging ourselves and collaborating with other industries, consumers, brands, and governments to get in on the action too.

We’re switching it up from ‘we can solve it,’ to ‘we can solve it together.’

The Nirta sustainability journey is focused on 3 pillars:

1. Packaging and recycling

Packaging allows us to conveniently bring our water to you, our consumer, preserving the natural mineral waters quality – but we believe it shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment. After all, our water couldn’t exist without a healthy environment.

Adopting a circular model

Mainstream bottling systems are still primarily linear — raw materials are used to make packaging, and after the product is consumed, the packaging is thrown away, adding new waste to the environment. Simply put: this model isn’t sustainable.

Because we’re committed to protecting and nourishing the health of our planet and its people, we are playing our part to accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular economy of sustainable packaging. Simply put, this means eliminating packaging we don’t need and innovating packaging where possible to ensure it can be recycled and safely reused again and again so it remains part of the circular economy and does not become waste or pollution. In January 2019, we pledged to become a circular brand and transform our packaging to make all our plastic bottles* from 100% recycled PET (rPET) by 2025.

2. Source protection

Our commitment to source preservation runs deep. We never want to take more than nature can provide and replenish each year.

To help us preserve our source and promote sustainable agricultural practices in the Islamabad region, we co-founded Bin Qutab Foundation to work with municipalities since 2007. Since then, we’ve been working hand-in-hand with the local community to not only foster local development but make sure our source has a healthy sustainable future.

Beyond the environment, we’re continually investing in our water ecosystem and advancing scientific understanding of the management and protection of water resources. At the Nirta bottling site, we employ a dedicated team of hydrogeologists to help ensure we treat our source and water cycle with respect. This team collects samples to ensure that the aquifer (our underground water source) is regularly replenished. We value them greatly as saviors of the most precious resource on earth!

3. Climate journey

We’re committed to operating sustainably by continuously working to measure and reduce our carbon footprint at every stage of our bottle’s lifecycle: from the materials we use and produce, to bottling, transportation, and recycling.
